Looking at our website anyone would think we have been in hibernation for about at least the past year. Well, far from it, we have in fact been quite busy - just not in terms of updating this.

In April 2011 we alerted you to the fact that Gene Payne was taking an Assistant Principal role at a Harris Academy, with a view to becoming a headteacher. In January this year he took on the role of head at The Causeway School in Eastbourne and is loving the challenge.
Caireen continues the work of GoddardPayne, working with old and new clients, including Nesta, Innovation Unit, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, City and Islington College and the Harris Federation. In the past year she has run an international research project looking at quality assurance mechanisms for education resources and written a number of publications for the Harris Federation and City and Islington College, and edited Nesta online learning materials available as part of www.openworkshop.nesta.org.uk.

In January 2012, Caireen also launched Cascade which helps people be creative by running high-quality craft workshops focused on using preloved and vintage materials. The business is growing and developing, and the Spring 2013 programme will be available soon.

And, after two years of enquiry, the commission has published its ‘new design for learning' (Download file). We are hugely proud to have been part of it. So much that’s positive has already happened, for everyone involved, but the best work of the commission is yet to come as the academies set out to fulfil the seventeen entitlements for all learners and teachers.

“The most significant skill I have gained from the commission is the ability to question things rather than accept them at face value.” Matthew Gavin, Year 10, Harris Academy Merton

The commission is launching the new design for learning at the Whole Education ‘Whose Curriculum Is It Anyway?’ event on 16 May 2011.

For some time Gene has been considering a move back into schools – a chance to put all he’s learnt and experienced in the past seven years into practice – and as of two weeks ago he has taken on the role of Vice Principal at Harris Academy Purley.
We have worked with the Harris Federation for a number of years – directly with senior leaders and with students and teachers as part of the brilliant and inspirational Harris Student Commission on Learning. It has felt like a natural progression for Gene to take on a role within the federation and he is enjoying every minute of it (from the first day he’s been full of stories about the kids and even the commute isn’t so bad).

Caireen will hold the fort at GoddardPayne for the foreseeable future. Having written two publications and delivered ThePublicOffice in Essex during the last couple of months she’s looking forward to a Learning Futures film project (with Paul Hamlyn Foundation and Innovation Unit), sharing learning from Radical Efficiency in Early Years (with Julie Temperley, NESTA and Innovation Unit), and any other interesting possibilities that might present themselves.

We hope you’ll stay in touch. (Gene can still be contacted on his mobile and at gene@goddardpayne.co.uk)

But working with Julie Temperley and New Philanthropy Capital on an approach to demonstrating value for money in early years settings is proving to be a brilliant piece of work. It involves creating a toolkit and process to help the locality teams involved in the Radical Efficiency in Early Years programme look carefully at the costs of their new service ideas and compare this to the existing service based on unit costs. The work Gene has been doing with the Prince's Trust 'Gatemate' campaign is featured (page 24/25). Project Leader Clara Clint talks about the support Gene has given...
Gene’s interventions helped build the relationships which drive the campaign and helped them to see themselves as a partnership:

"Working with Gene has helped to keep the project focused. Through regular meetings we discuss what’s going well and what the challenges are. Gene helps me and the campaign team to take a step back from the project and put it in perspective. He helps with positive motivation, and facilitation of meetings to make them more productive. It’s really good to have someone independent to the project be honest about what’s going well and what barriers are coming up."

The consultancy intervention has helped GateMate’s leaders to explore new ideas and new thinking. Gene encouraged them to take a cross-sectoral and international perspective on their work, which has ultimately increased the partnership group’s
ambitions for the project:

"We invited some experts from other fields completely unrelated to the world of work that we are in who came in and told us about campaigns in their world. We’ve looked to farther ambitious campaigns and thought ‘we can do that'."

It was a tough gig that forced us to think about and work through how you can effectively use prototyping to test the core concepts and assumptions behind a new service, as well as exploring specific interventions or touch-points.
