11/11/08: Successful Leadership for Promoting the Achievement of White Working Class Pupils by Dr Denis Mongon
Profiled in the Guardian today, this research looks at 12 schools that have managed to buck the national trend in the attainment levels of their white, working-class students.
Denis, our good friend and colleague, who undertook the research with Dr Chris Chapman, says, "It is clear that these successful schools are run by a particular type of person, who believes in him or herself and doesn't blame anyone else when things go wrong. They don't blame the kids, the staff, or even local or central government. They accept the situation for what it is and work within it. Moreover, they have a great sense of the community they serve." It's nice to have this endorsement which really ought to go to the schools we visited. The school leadership teams we met were just so impressive that they made writing the report a treat (rather than the chore that writing sometimes can be). It will be interesting to see how the work travels, we hope it has something to say for schools and pupils in a much wider range of circumstances than those the sponsors pointed us towards.
